Film of 2012

“The whole universe depends on everything fitting together just right. If one piece busts, even the smallest piece… the whole universe will get busted.”

– Hushpuppy, Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in The Bathtub

There were more accomplished films (like The Hunt, Rust & Bone, Amour, A Separation) and films that sat at the top of my best list for a long while (The Raid and … well, no The Raid pretty much sat up there all year until I saw Beasts).

Beasts is a force of pure, raw emotion. I was swept up in the Malick-like visuals, fell in love with the soundtrack, taken in by the modern fairy tale that envelopes you. It is so rare to have a film that makes you feel, especially as a filmmaker when you can’t but help see the strings moving, but this, this film grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go until the final titles stop running.

I could not love this film more.
